Processes that Protect the Island

Education Programs

By understanding the natural landscape, residents are able to better appreciate the flora and fauna as well as make informed decisions that will promote the conservation and protection of the habitats, inhabitants, and natural resources of the region. The Trust’s mission of preserving nature on Spring Island and serving as a resource to other regional communities who wish to do the same cannot be completed without robust educational programs. The purpose of the Trust’s education programs is to foster a sense of community and teach residents about the special place they call home. Education programs are an essential piece to maintaining a community’s sense of place and fostering a culture of conservation.

Trust Nature Series

The Trust Nature Series is a collection of nature education programs that span a wide range of topics. They are offered weekly or bi-weekly. Programs range from classroom sessions to field studies, birding trips, nature walks, and “nature safaris”. The Trust's educational program lineup also includes short nature videos on timely topics, nature scavenger hunts, nature crafts, trail guides, and other publications.

Trust Nature Shorts

Nature Shorts are short (30 minute), drop-in educational programs held in the Mobley Nature Center on Tuesday afternoons. They are designed to provide a quick introduction to a nature/natural resources-related topic and ALL staff members participate in offering these programs. They are a great way to get a nature-fix in a short period of time and to interact with all the members of the Trust staff.

Trust Talks

Trust Talks are lectures held weekly on Thursday evenings on a variety of topics – including history, science, art, culture, and wellness. Speakers come from all over the country for these special programs which are a foundation of the Spring Island culture – there’s no better place for a member to see their neighbors’ faces all in one room!

Mobley Nature Center

The Mobley Nature Center was constructed in 1998. It is the home of the Spring Island Trust’s operations and houses a collection of live and preserved animals that are native to the region. The Nature Center is open to Spring Island Members and their guests, and visitors may tour the Nature Center through our outreach programs such as the Master Naturalist class, native plant tours, and organized external programs hosted by the Trust.

Camp Spring Island

Camp Spring Island is an annual nature camp for children visiting Spring Island during the 4th of July. For three days, children ages 6-15 experience “the nature of Spring Island” in a variety of educational and fun activities that include cast netting, shark fishing, bug catching, nature crafts, and more. Many volunteers help make this event a huge success.

Native Plant Project

The Spring Island Trust Native Plant Project (NPP) is a volunteer-led project established in the spring of 2009. The volunteers are Spring Island members and the facilities are located on Spring Island. The mission of the Spring Island Trust Native Plant Project is to rescue, propagate and distribute native plants and to provide education about how to use them in the landscape. Plants and education are made available to the public through native plant sales which are open to the public and the Native Plant Project website.

Trips and Tours

The purpose of Trips and Tours (a member-driven program) is to provide members with the opportunity to gain a greater appreciation of the Low Country history, nature, culture and art. This is accomplished through a wide variety of events and excursions focused on exploring the Low County region and beyond. These events and excursions bring together members who might not otherwise know one another, and serve as another way in which to strengthen the sense of community on Spring Island.
The mission of the Spring Island Trust is to preserve and protect Spring Island’s environment and cultural history, providing education, expertise, and leadership in the conservation of natural resources throughout the Lowcountry.
